A dog collar, dog harness and dog leashes are among the basic needs for our dogs. It allows taking them outside while keeping them from harm.
These can vary from designer dog collars to personalized dog collars to the plain nylon or leather collars. There are many kinds available but an ordinary flat web or leather collar is standard for daily wear.
There are also unique dog collars with spikes and chain slip collars or “pinch” collars for training larger dogs but these should never, ever be left on an unattended dog. They have their points in the right hands but this is something that takes experience and insight to use. Most ordinary training can be done with an ordinary dog collar and dog leash.
With small breeds especially consider the use of a dog harness. Many toy dogs can get a collapsed trachea from pulling or a mistimed jerk on the leash, and dog harnesses can help prevent discomfort for these dogs as well as preventing on all small dogs. A small dog harness is an inexpensive investment.
Basic dog collars are the easiest to find. There are many types of retractable dog leashes which are not recommended. Some can break and a recall of one showed the snap could give way. Additionally these allow loss of control of your dog. A proper leash keeps your dog next to you, allowing you to walk your dog not your dog walking you.
Cats need equipment too! Cat collars often have a bell and an elastic insert that allows it to come off if a cat gets caught. A cat harness is better for walking a cat for this reason also. It is easier to body control a cat than by a cat collar when walking.
Collars, leashes and harnesses are important items and warrant getting quality equipment. Your pet’s life could depend on it.
