Dog clothing was once considered a sign of someone having “too much money” and, for some, this is still true. However there are practical reasons to get your dogs clothes and for some this can mean dog dresses and dog coats for a given occasion.
Proper measuring is needed to fit small dog clothes. From costumes to tee shirts to coats little dogs have long had much more to choose from than their larger counterparts.
For big dog clothes this can take a different view. Large dog clothes are usually for protection for other reasons. This might include also costumes for Halloween or coats for those big dogs that have short coats.
Like we get adapted to warm weather so do many dogs in warmer climates so if traveling to a cooler one a dog sweater or jacket may be in order. This keeps a dog comfortable and also keeps your dog from stressing excessively while traveling.
If you find dog coats or other dog clothing is in order always measure your dog to be sure that you choose the closest to the size needed. Too small unnecessarily binds the dog and too large means it can come off as well as snag on things and tear.
Dogs should be measured in three places for ordering dog clothing. The first is around the neck, which needs to be done even for a basic collar. For dog coats you will also need to measure your dog from the base of the neck in front of the shoulder blades to the base of the tail. Additionally measure the girth around the chest of the dog behind the front legs at the largest point. These three measurements help insure that when the dogs clothes arrives they will fit. If you are stuck between sizes it’s better to go a little big than too small.
This is an easy set of measurements to take and gives the best chance of getting accurate sizes for your dog. Dog clothing is for more than just pampering our pets!
