The Afghan hounds are friendly and intelligent although a little strong willed. They seem to have an aloof expression always and they even seem so to strangers although they are very endearing with family. Although not rated highly in intelligence tests most owners have attested to their very sharp intellect so much so that they are used as therapy dogs in some places.

Recent DNA testing has proved that the Afghan hounds are one of the most ancient of dog breeds and the least diverged from wolves. They are sight hounds and have been used to hunt prey starting from rabbits to antelope. Their prey drive is very strong and they need to be kept on a leash when outside. Afghan hounds have a long coat of hair; a testament to their origins in the cold mountains of Afghanistan. This hair is very silky and long and requires constant grooming to keep them free of mats, but it is this hair that makes them very popular in the show ring.
