The Beagle is a very friendly outgoing dog. They are very carefree and happy-go- lucky and make very good house pets because of this. They are mild mannered and will cheerful, although a little stubborn at times but this is all part of their overall character.
The Beagle comes in typical hound colors like black, tan, white or red although the tricolored ones are the most common. The typical coloring is a black or tan saddle with white legs and chest. The colored portion will usually have a shading of other colors; e.g. a black saddle will come with tan shading and vice versa.
The Beagle looks like a Foxhound in miniature. They usually come in two height categories the 12 inch and the 15 inch, although they are one breed. They have a very good sense of smell and were used to hunt small game like rabbits and fowl and were considered hounds par excellence at this. They have stocky bodies that can take the rough and tumble of the hunt very well and are short because they are scent, rather than sight hounds. They are also big enough to have a decent turn of speed although they were never considered great runners. Their coats are short and dense and need a hard brushing now and then. They are also very cheerful and playful dogs and are good pets to have around because they tend to lift the spirits.
Although they do not require a lot of exercise it is good to leave them out in the yard because they tend to get overweight by sitting idly around. This is because although they are capable of amazing levels of endurance in the hunt they are very lazy by nature.
