Other information:
The Bearded Collie is one of the oldest dog breeds in Britain and its true origins are not known. Dog fanciers however tend to agree that they are descended from sheep herding dogs from Europe like the Polish Sheepdog or the Komondor. These dogs are believed to have interbred with the local terriers to give the Bearded Collie. Their name for long has been the Highland collie and was changed only recently to Bearded Collie. They are very good herders of sheep and have a unique bounding way of herding them that is not seen in any other herding breed. They are versatile breeds and have been known to herd animals ranging from ducks to cattle. These dogs are very affectionate and are accustomed to being companions in the true sense of the word and do not take to rough treatment very well. They are however very loyal and although of an independent bend will get the job done. They have long coats with the show breeds tending to have longer coats than the working dogs. This coat needs a lot of maintenance as it tends to mat up very quickly.
